Apart from the Defending Champion, Maria Santangelo none of the seven seeded players could make it to the semi finals of Sony Ericsson International, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Main Draw singles, as they were beaten by lower ranked players.
Toady, Santangelo will meet Savchuk, while Yaroslava Shvedova will meet Obziler to claim a berth for the finals.
The biggest upset of the day was the defeat of second seed Sania Mirza of India by Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 4-6 and fourth seed Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia by Olga Savchuk of Ukraine in straight sets 3-6, 4-6 at the KSLTA Kingfisher Signature Tennis Center.
Maria Santangelo had cakewalk over Yurika Sema of Japan 6-1, 6-4, while Tzipora Obziler of Israel defeated Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). With this win, Obziler ranked 117th now joins two other Israeli’s, who are in Top 100 club. Shvedova described her win over Sania as thrilling. “I had a game plan to attack her back hand as it was not strong as forehand. This worked in my favour.”
153th ranked Olga Savchuk upset 78th ranked Jelena Kostanic Tosic in straight sets within 50 minutes. Right from the beginning the Ukrainian had an upper hand. Even before Kostanic could warm up, she had taken a lead of 5-0. After few more games, the first set ended 6-3. The second set was evenly poised at 3-3, but Savchuk outplayed Kostanic through powerful shots and made it to the last four.
